50 Years of Aviation History
documented by Correspondence in Archives

The Igor I. Sikorsky Historical Archives includes 50 years of both professional and personal correspondence of Mr. Sikorsky and several of the most significant executives in the history of Sikorsky Aircraft. Charles Lindbergh, Orville Wright, Eddie Rickenbacker, Ernst Heinkel and Anthony Fokker are only a few of the pioneers of aviation whose correspondence is found in the archives. Original correspondence for Eleanor Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixion reflect the political changes of the past 75 years.
Some of the most remarkable letters are from non-aviation related people such as Helen Keller and Father Flanagan. Notable scientists such as Werner von Braun and Alexander Klemin often sought the advice of Mr. Sikorsky. It is important to note, however, that the correspondence most cherished by Mr. Sikorsky were notes and letters from school children and other people who sought information regarding aviation in general of information about the Sikorsky Company. He responded personally to each and every request.

FEBRUARY 9, 1997
COMMEMORATES THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF
THE FIRST HELICOPTER NAVAL RESCUE

To Quote Igor I. Sikorsky

"If a man is in need of rescue, an airplane can come in and throw flowers on him, and that's just about all."
"But a direct lift aircraft could come in and save his life."

Jimmy Viner

The helicopter has and will continue to save
lives regardless of the manufacturer.
With this in mind we pay tribute to the first person to pilot a helicopter during a Helicopter Naval Rescue
D. D. (Jimmy) Viner.
By honoring Jimmy we honor all aviators.
To the next 50 years.

Sikorsky R-4 (free download 1.3 meg PDF file) was the first production helicopter in the world and proved itself in active service in W.W.II. This unique model has spinning main and tail rotors and underscores the helicopter as a very important part of our aviation history. www.fiddlersgreen.net
